Jiu Jitsu is hands down the best and most effective martial art for self defense. This has been proven time and time again. The world saw first hand the efficiency and power of Jiu Jitsu in the early 90's when Royce Gracie fought in UFC 1 and shocked the world.
What would have happened if Royce Gracie was unable to secure a takedown? What if he failed to bring his first opponent down to the ground? Chances are good that he would have lost that fight and maybe BJJ would be an obscure martial art only practiced in South America.
Thank goodness Royce practiced takedowns! He understood the importance of taking his opponents down and so do we. At Kraken Jiu Jitsu we spend significant time teaching our students how to perform takedowns. We have also invested significantly in our Fuji spring subfloor that helps protect our students and minimize the risk of injury. This subfloor provides cushion that dampens the shock felt by students when they hit the mat.
Wherever you train Jiu Jitsu, make sure you are practicing takedowns in a realistic way. If you train BJJ but you don't have any effective takedowns you are not prepared to defend yourself. Be prepared!
